Surroundings
Comply™ tips may significantly reduce your ability to hear sounds from your environment. You are responsible for evaluating whether the use of a device with Comply tips affects your ability to safely perform an activity. Use of Comply tips with a device during driving is not recommended and may be illegal in some areas.
Hearing Protection
Use devices outfitted with Comply tips according to the instructions of the device manufacturer. Proper Comply tip size and preparation of the tips is necessary to achieve the desired level of hearing protection, or noise isolation. Do not use the audio device at high listening levels, or volumes, as this can also have a negative impact on hearing health.
Pressure Equalization
Comply tips allow some equalization of air pressure between your ear canal and your surroundings. This equalization happens slowly and is reduced or eliminated when tips become dirty or wet. Activities requiring rapid pressure equalization, such as parachuting, should only be performed according to the device manufacturer’s recommendation.
Ear Health
When attached to the device, the Comply tips do not come close to the eardrum of the user. Do not use Comply™ tips if your ear canal has any cuts, scrapes, infections, or other medical issues.
Selecting the Proper Comply Tip
Comply tips come in three different sizes: Small, Medium and Large. The majority of individuals will use the Medium size. It is essential to select a size that provides a complete acoustic seal (no sound leaking into the ear), while allowing the individual to comfortably wear the tips over an extended time period. The Comply tips should only be used on devices that have been tested and approved for compatibility, see the sitemap on Complyfoam.com for a complete list.
Insertion Steps
• The hearing device should be turned off. Roll the Comply tip into a thin, round cylinder, like rolling a foam earplug. The foam cannot be over-compressed. Be careful not to unseat the tip from the device’s sound tube.
• Hold the device with one hand and use your free hand to pull your outer ear back and out to the side. This will straighten your ear canal.
• While holding the outer ear, insert the Comply tip on the hearing device into your ear canal. Do not force the tip into your ear and do not insert the tip without rolling the tip to compress the foam first. If the tip expands before it can be inserted, roll the foam again and reattempt insertion.
• For deeper insertion, open-and-close your jaw multiple times, as you insert the device with the rolled and compressed Comply tip—this will open up the ear canal.
• Once the Comply tip is inserted, hold the device in place for 15-30 seconds while the Comply foam expands with the heat of your ear canal, and seals your ear canal.
• Repeat with the other ear.
• Reduce volume to lowest setting and turn on hearing device. Set volume to appropriate level.
Helpful Tip
The ear canal is dynamic and an individually unique environment. You may have a bend or a narrowing area that is causing the foam at the very top of the opening to bend over and partially block the core opening. Before compressing the foam by rolling the sides down, place your finger on the top of the Comply tip and evenly push the foam down toward the top of the core. Compress the sides as usual and insert into the ear canal.
Tip Life Expectancy / When to Change
To achieve optimal performance, Comply tips should be changed every 2-4 months, or when they become soiled. Occasional cleaning of the tips can improve the lifespan (see “Cleaning” section). Keeping clean ears can help increase the lifespan of the tips. If the tips show signs of mechanical wear such as tearing, cracking or flaking, replace them with a new pair immediately.
Storage
Between Uses: Keep Comply tips in a clean, dry storage pouch or case. If the tips get wet, leave them out overnight in a clean place to dry.
Long-Term Storage Conditions: Comply tips should be stored at temperatures below 27°C (80°F). Tips should be kept in an airtight, opaque container. Long-term exposure to UV light or some gases (like the exhaust from forklifts and vehicles) can degrade or discolor the foam.
Cleaning
Comply tips can be cleaned occasionally to maximize performance. This can be done with a clean, lint-free cloth and clean, warm water. Moisten the cloth and wipe the surface of the tip. Allow them to air-dry completely before the next use.
Never use soaps, detergents, solvents ,or any other cleaning agent, as they may degrade the foam.
Chemical Exposure
Avoid allowing Comply tips to come in direct contact with chemicals and consumer products including, but not limited to: Alcohol, Lotion, Sunscreen, Bug Repellent, Hand Sanitizer, Solvents, Fuels, or Propellants. If these or other chemicals come in contact with the tips, replace the tips with a fresh, clean pair.
Water / Sweat Exposure
If the tips become saturated with water, gently squeeze the excess water out of the foam and allow the tips to dry before next use.
If the tips become saturated with sweat, squeeze them gently under slow-running, warm, clean water to rinse out the sweat. Then gently squeeze the excess water out of the foam, and allow the tips to air-dry before next use.
